ROCK MUSIC CDs
OVERVIEW: ROCK MUSIC
Rock music is a popular music genre. It emerged in the United Kingdom and the United States during and after the 1960s. It all began in the 1940s and 1950s with the birth of rock & roll. Rhythm and blues and country music spawned rock & roll. Rock music is connected to many other genres, including blues and folk. It is influenced by jazz, classical, and other musical styles.
Musically, rock mostly employs the electric guitar as part of a rock band that also includes bass guitar and drums. Rock music is built on songs. It features a 4/4 pace and a verse-chorus structure.
However, rock has evolved to the point where it is difficult to identify popular musical instruments. Rock music lyrics, like popular music lyrics, are primarily about “romantic love.” They may, however, contain social or political undertones. Rock emphasizes on musical ability and live performance, and it strives to be more authentic than pop music.
By the late 1960s, a slew of new rock music subgenres had emerged. Blues-rock, folk-rock, country-rock, and jazz-rock fusion were among the hybrids. Punk rock deepened and responded to some of these tendencies in the second half of the 1970s, producing a raw, explosive type of music defined by overt political and social criticisms.
Punk spawned a slew of subgenres throughout the 1980s, including New Wave, post-punk, and, ultimately, the alternative rock movement.
Alternative rock became the most popular form of rock music in the 1990s. Grunge, Britpop, and indie music helped it break into the mainstream. Since then, there has been a further fusion of subgenres.
Pop punk, rap-rock, and rap metal are examples, as are purposeful efforts to revisit rock’s past, such as the garage rock/post-punk and synthpop revivals around the turn of 2000.
Cultural and social movements have also benefited from rock music. This resulted in significant subcultures such as mods and rockers in the United Kingdom and the “hippie” culture that spread out from San Francisco in the United States in the 1960s.
Similarly, punk culture in the 1970s spawned goth and emo subcultures. Rock music stems from the same folk lineage as protest songs. Political action has been associated with rock music.
